1886-1972. US biochemist. In 1914 he isolated
the hormone thyroxin, the active compound of
the thyroid gland. He went on to work on
secretions from the adrenal gland, among
which he discovered a compound E, which was
in fact the steroid cortisone. For this
Kendall shared the 1950 Nobel Prize for
Medicine with Philip Hench (1896-1965) and
Tadeus Reichstein.
